BREEDERS CODE OF ETHICS

Breeding regulations: 

1. All breeding dogs must have a genetic profile on file suitable for confirming parentage of progeny. This is currently executed through Embark Veterinary’s services. 

1a. All breeders will register their litters with the NIAW.

2. All breeding dogs must be microchipped. 

3.a. All breeding dogs must be fully health tested according to the "health requirements" section prior to mating UNLESS: The incomplete health requirement is the genetic parentage test (EMBARK) which can be completed along with the puppies. Please note registrations will not be issued until these results are completed and submitted. Failure to submit will result in suspension until results are submitted. 

b. In addition to the “Basic” tests a new candidate may be asked to complete further tests, depending on breed (eg. MDR1, Dwarfism, AHE, CEA..) 

4. All breeding dogs must have a Wolfcontent under 30% proven by Embark. In exceptional cases, a minimal deviation is allowed if the aim of the mating is to reduce the wolf content.

 5. All breeding dogs must be a minimum of 24months of age prior to a mating.

 6.a. Breeding dogs must have a minimum 4 gen pedigree without questionable elements. 

6.a.1. 3 gen pedigree accepted only with breed specific dna heath testing 

6.a.2 for limited pedigree a maximum of 2 litters only.

 b. for breeding pairs the predicted litter COI must be 25% or less according to embark 

7. All puppies bred before leaving the breeder must have 

a.Microchip 

b. At least first vaccination 

c. Embark test 

d. DNA parentage 

e 4 gen recorded lineage 

f.  All puppies must be tested if one parent is a carrier of OSD3

8. All breeders must report all health conditions on their dogs & litters to the NIAW and Wolflookalike Database, as stipulated within the Registration rules. This includes puppies who may not have survived whelping, or ones who perished shortly thereafter. Health Requirements: All health tests must be presented in the form of an official certificate from a recognised body. Male and female 

1. Hips: A NIAW breeding dog must have passing hip scores from BVA, FCI or OFA. Preliminary scores are not accepted. The minimum age for a Hip evaluation is 12 months. Hip scores are accepted up to 18 (BVA) B2 (FCI) or Fair (OFA) A combination score should be a maximum of 22 (BVA), B X A (FCI) Fair X Good (OFA) or equivalent 

2. Elbows: A NIAW breeding dog must have passing elbow scores from BVA, FCI or OFA. Preliminary scores are not accepted. The minimum age for an elbow evaluation is 12months Elbow scores are accepted up to 1,1 A combination score should be a maximum of 1,1.

 3. Eyes

 a. A NIAW breeding dog must have a clear eye exam that is current within twelve (12) months of each breeding, as conducted by a licensed veterinary ophthalmologist. Any notes or minor conditions will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

 b. All NIAW breeding dogs all must undergo a gonioscopy every three (3) years. Gonioscopy result can be up to grade 1 or equivalent in each eye. Grade 2 may be considered if the angle is known and is at the lower end of Grade 2. Dogs with a higher than grade 0 must be paired with a dog who is grade 0. Exceptions may be made on a case by case basis if angle is known. 

4. A NIAW breeding dog must have an official certificate showing the dog’s DM result. Embark result is also acceptable. Carriers of DM must always be paired with a dog who is clear. 

5. A NIAW breeding dog must be immediately retired if any first degree relatives develop or are known to have any of the following ailments: Epilepsy, Addisons 

6. A NIAW breeding dog with a parent having Carrier status of any ailment must be tested for that specific ailment 

 

Male Requirements: 

1. A male requires a certificate of entirety confirming the presence of 2 normally descended testicles

 a.1. In the event one testicle is undescended and there are no other issues the dog may be accepted as a stud.

 a.2. If a cryptorchid/monorchid male produces offspring with the same condition he will be retired immediately

 2. A stud may produce a maximum of 3 litters a year 

Females: 

1. A breeding female must be retired the day after she turns eight  years of age, UNLESS: The breeding female is examined and cleared by a reproductive vet to be physically capable of supporting another pregnancy, whelping, and litter.

 2. A breeding female must whelp her first litter prior to turning six (6) years of age. 

3. A breeding female must be retired after two Cesarean sections (C-sections). 

4. A breeding female may whelp a maximum of four (4) total litters during her lifetime. Breed specific (X) denotes the crosses of these dogs whereby the parent has no score available or is a carrier. Please note this is not an exhaustive list, if breeds outside this list are considered then tests will be assessed accordingly.
